Hannah Harper captivated the American Idol judges — and brought Carrie Underwood to tears — with her vulnerable story and original song.

Harper, 25, a stay-at-home mother of three from Willow Springs, Missouri, “had an unconventional upbringing,” according to American Idol. She spent seven years singing worship music and traveling nationwide on a tour bus before her “hectic” stage of life as a mom to three young children. Harper walked into the American Idol audition room in a homemade dress and boots. She shared the vulnerable story about her experience overcoming postpartum depression, which inspired the original song, “String Cheese.”

“My youngest is 1, and shortly after he was born, I had postpartum depression. And so, I was sitting on my couch — I said I wasn’t going to cry — I was sitting on my couch wallowing,” Harper shared in an emotional moment with judges Underwood, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie. “And you have boys. You know,” she turned to Underwood, a mother of two. “Everybody wants to touch you, and I didn’t want to be touched. …I was just having a pity party, praying that the Lord would calm my spirit. And my son kept coming up to me. He said, ‘mom, open this. ..open my cheese.’ I’m like, ‘leave me alone with the daggum cheese!’

“And I finally opened his cheese, and when I did, I realized that God had put me in that place, and that where I was in my house was the biggest ministry that I could ever have, and being a mom,” Harper said. “So, I gathered myself, and I got up off the couch, and I quit throwing a pity party and I realized that that was exactly what I wanted. And I kind of kicked the postpartum depression in the butt, and I said ‘I ain’t doing it.’ So, I wrote this song called ‘String Cheese.’”

Before Harper delivered her heartfelt performance, Underwood offered, “do you need a second? …I can’t cry and sing, so I don’t want to put you in that position.” The 2005 American Idol champion brought Harper a tissue and gave her a moment to collect herself. Underwood took her seat, and appeared emotional throughout Har[er’s rendition of “String Cheese.”

“Do you have more tissues?” Underwood asked Bryan as she wiped tears from her eyes. “My turn (to cry)! Well, that’s about the most relatable song I think I’ve ever heard.”

Bryan said Harper did a “great job,” and praised the “mountainous, bluegrass sound,” that reminded him of Kacey Musgraves, Alison Krauss, Dolly Parton and others. Richie added that he hoped Harper would look to Parton as an example of expert storytelling that uplifts others.

“You might be my favorite person that’s walked through those doors in the past three days,” Underwood said. “You’re gorgeous. You look famous already. I just think you have just a beautiful simplicity to your voice. You’re one that I’m going to think about when we leave here, like, ‘I wonder what song she’s going to sing next?’ And I feel like I’m going to be just rooting for you. I loved everything about everything you just did. …I’ll go first. It’s a ‘yes’ from me.”

Harper made it through to the Hollywood rounds with unanimous “yes” votes from the judges. This year, Idol’s iconic Hollywood Week will take place in Nashville for the first time. Contestants will have only one round to deliver “make-or-break performances” during Hollywood Week: Music City Takeover, making it “the biggest Hollywood Week cut in Idol history,” per ABC. American Idol airs on ABC on Monday nights from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. ET/PT. It’s available to stream the next day on Hulu.
