PHOENIX (AP) — Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio is celebrating his 84th birthday on Tuesday.

The political strength of the six-term sheriff has been gradually declining over the past four election cycles.

But Arpaio's base of devoted supporters and his impressive fundraising have helped him pull out wins.

He faces several challengers this year in his re-election campaign.

A federal judge found Arpaio in civil contempt of court a month ago for disobeying his orders in a racial profiling case.

The ruling is expected to bring greater court oversight of Arpaio's office and could lead to a criminal contempt case that could expose the sheriff to fines and even jail time.
